June 15 Books Books Books Books BooksI saw one of the original 1215 editions of the Magna Carta today And Isaac Newtons Original Principia Mathematica Leonardo De Vinici's notebook sketches too That book that got Galileo into trouble And a mortgage agreement signed by one "William Shakespeare" The log book from the HMS Victory (made famous at the Battle of Trafalgar) The in-voyage journal of pacific explorer James Cook A letter written by Queen Elizabeth I Another one written by Florence Nightingale And a letter written by a teenage Jane Austin too Also the diary of Arctic explorer Robert Scott A Gutenberg Bible Mozart's original manuscripts Some of Beethoven's too And even an early telling of the famous Beowulf epic Amongst some over things I really love the British Library. Books connect you with the past in a way nothing else really can. And the British Library has a lot of them. April 02 The Students ParadoxRevision: Simultaneously the only way to truly understand a subject (and, hence, fully appreciate it) and, at the same time, the quickest way to ensure you end up hating it. What a paradox! March 24 Insipired by the Tutankhamen ExhibitionI went to the Tutankhamen Exhibition at the O2 Centre today and it was absolutely amazing. I mean, seriously, the artefacts in his tomb were coloured more brightly than a bag of rainbow skittles! Decorated in more detailed than the finest piece of New York jewellery. And preserved so well they might as well have come out of the workshop yesterday for all I or any of the other people walking around could tell. And then when you stop to think for a moment that this blast of colour and majesty is actually so old that it was already ancient when Jesus and Ceaser walked the Earth.... well.... it kind of gives you chills just thinking about it. It really does. Certainly gave me a whole new appreciation for Egyptian culture and the skills of its inhabitants. Anyway, inspired by this visit I give you the following hieroglyphic message to try and understand. It's a simple enough message but perhaps not directly obvious. I'll give you a little clue though. Well, two actually. Clue one is that it mentions (somewhere) my name and clue two is that, in light of clue one, the rest of the message might come across as just a tiny weeny itsy witsy little bit arrogant :-P ![]() A big prize to the first person who correctly gives me a translation!
